Watchdog: IRS Didn't Follow Its Own Procedures in DOGE-fueled Layoffs

The IRS told thousands of probationary employees in February that they were being laid off at least in part because of performance reasons.

But a new watchdog report found that wasn’t true, and that only a handful of the staffers fired then had below what the IRS terms a “fully successful” rating.

Tuesday’s report from Treasury’s inspector general for tax administration revives the controversy over the Department of Government Efficiency’s work at the IRS and throughout the federal government, particularly early this year.
