Sort of amazing that a squillion-dollar corporation can’t optimize its performance for a “standard” feature, leading to a loss of legibility for readers, but here we are, in the era of Enshittification. There is possibly a post to be written on this, to make up for the poor example I set here:

UPDATE Martel now hosted locally, but ligatures still not functional. Which makes sense, because the font preview of the TTF files on my local machine doesn’t show any.
UPDATE I replaced Martel with Crimson Pro, but with the same ugly results.
